چکیده
O fever –Bartonellosis or Carrion’s disease is endemic to the Andes Mountains of South America, especially in Peru 500 to 3000 meters above sea level. The organism is transmitted by the bite of sand fly. In acute phase it presents as a febrile illness with myalgias and delirium. In untreated cases death rate is up to 40%. Patients that survive the acute phase, develop a crop of nodular skin lesions-Verruga peruana usually, on face and trunk, 4-6 wks. later.

Oroya Fever and Verruga Peruana: Bartonelloses Unique to South America
Bartonella bacilliformis is the bacterial agent of Carrión's disease and is presumed to be transmitted between humans by phlebotomine sand flies. Carrión's disease is endemic to high-altitude valleys of the South American Andes, and the first reported outbreak (1871) resulted in over 4,000 casualties. Since then, numerous outbreaks have been documented in endemic regions, and over the last two ...
متن کاملAn epidemic of Oroya fever in the Peruvian Andes.
Between February and October 1987, a febrile illness killed 14 persons and seriously affected at least 14 others in Shumpillan, a remote Peruvian mountain village of 353 people. The illness was characterized by fever, headache, chills, and pallor. The fatality rate of untreated cases was 88%. The patients, 71% of whom were male, were 1-75 years of age. Fatal illnesses progressed from lethargy t...
متن کاملBacteremia, fever, and splenomegaly caused by a newly recognized bartonella species.
Bartonella species cause serious human infections globally, including bacillary angiomatosis, Oroya fever, trench fever, and endocarditis. We describe a patient who had fever and splenomegaly after traveling to Peru and also had bacteremia from an organism that resembled Bartonella bacilliformis, the causative agent of Oroya fever, which is endemic to Peru. However, genetic analyses revealed th...
متن کاملIsolation and characterization of Bartonella bacilliformis from an expatriate Ecuadorian.
Carrion's disease is typically biphasic with acute febrile illness characterized by bacteremia and severe hemolytic anemia (Oroya fever), followed by benign, chronic cutaneous lesions (verruga peruana). The causative agent, Bartonella bacilliformis, is endemic in specific regions of Peru and Ecuador. We describe atypical infection in an expatriate patient who presented with acute splenomegaly a...
متن کاملInfection-related hemolysis and susceptibility to Gram-negative bacterial co-infection
Increased susceptibility to co-infection with enteric Gram-negative bacteria, particularly non-typhoidal Salmonella, is reported in malaria and Oroya fever (Bartonella bacilliformis infection), and can lead to increased mortality. Accumulating epidemiological evidence indicates a causal association with risk of bacterial co-infection, rather than just co-incidence of common risk factors. Both m...
